Surprising Ways To Boost Your Mood
It’s normal to feel glum from time to time. Before you spiral downward into full-blown misery though, here are some ways to lift your mood instantly.
1. Listen To Music
You probably already know that putting on your favourite tunes can put you in a more relaxed state of mind, but did you know that listening to music could also improve your physical health?
A new study conducted by Austria’s General Hospital of Salzburg discovered that patients with chronic back pain who listened to classical music after surgery experienced better pain relief than those who did not.
Another study conducted by Dr Robert Herdegen of America’s Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia showed that participants who listened to music while cycling managed to travel 11 percent further than those. This demonstrates that listening to music helps improve your overall endurance and distracts from any discomfort you may experience during your workout.
2. Reach Out To A Loved One
Human beings are social creatures after all. We need to feel connected to other people in order to keep our mood on the upswing. But don’t just leave a message on your friend’s Facebook wall. Pick up the phone for a chat, or better yet, ask if you can take him or her out to coffee. Not only will the social connection boost your mood, doing something nice for another person is also another great way to elevate your spirits.
3. Learn Something New
You know that sense of wonder or achievement you get whenever you learn something new? You can recreate that feeling easily in the comfort of your own home. Just hop on to sites like TED, Khan Academy, or Crash Course, where you can discover something new about topics as varied as science, history, and philosophy.
4. Take A Hot Shower
When your body’s core temperature is heated up, it affects your muscles and decreases internal activity, which is why you experience that feeling of utter relaxation. For a complete pampering session, break out your favourite bath products and indulge in the luxurious scents and textures.
5. Get Active
We get it – when you’re down in a funk, the last thing you want is to get up and exercise. However, that’s precisely why you need to get moving. Exercise releases a flood of endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine into your body, leaving you in a calmer, happier state of mind. Over time, regular exercise also helps build your self-confidence and wards off nagging feelings of depression or anxiety.
